Insert Shots

We have decided to include insert shots of money jars and alcohol bottles in order to aid the visuals and comply with Andrew Goodwin's idea that the lyrics and visuals are linked in music videos.
Throughout our music video we see the journey of the money jars as when our protagonist first loses her job she begins losing money and she begins doing unconventional jobs we see the jar filling up until the very end where it is full.We edited these insert shots to the beat as they appear for a few seconds adding a playful and light-hearted feel to our music video.
Below are a few of our shots..

Evaluation Questions

In the evaluation the following four questions must be addressed:

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Editing Update

We are currently editing gaps in our music video in order for the lip-syncing to match up accurately and flow well and have taken advantage of excess shots we collected to help us achieve this.

Saturation Feedback

We collected audience feedback on the saturation and brightness of our shots in our music video to help us decide which way we anted to edit our shots.
We found the following:

Some of the comment's made were...

Moving forward with this audience feedback we have decided to have no filter for the whole duration of our shots as the large majority of our audience felt that this looked better and less depressing and we also as a group felt that this was too dramatic.Overall having collected this feedback was useful and beneficial as it helped us understand what our audience preferred and cater this to them in our final product.

Saturation and Brightness

For our music video,we are undecided as to whether to apply a black/white filter on our shot's as this is a very common aspect we have noticed from our research or whether to keep the original colours of our shot's.
We edited a shorts series of shot's in both ways in order to help us gain a better visual when deciding. In addition to this, we will show the following to a range of people and gain audience feedback in order to help our final decision.

Jump Cuts

We decided to use a jump cut editing style for particular shots throughout our music video as I felt that it made the viewing experience more enjoyable and added a playful and lighthearted vibe to the music video as the song did have an upbeat rhythm at some points therefore we inserted this style of editing at these particular moment in order to match the beat as the sequence of shots flowed more naturally when we did specifically the shots of Jana walking into B&Q.

Record Label for My Artist

My artist 'Eden' would most  likely be signed to Epic Records, which is an American major record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment.
The label was at first known as a Jazz denomination of artists that didn't fit the more mainstream artists of sister company 'Columbia Records'. This really works well for our artist who doesn't want to be seen as a mainstream manufactured singer.

In addition to this, the record label is owned by  successful and big company like Sony Music which will be able to afford the resources for worldwide marketing campaigns, giving more exposure for my artist.
Also the record label is based in America and would therefore mean an international audience would be targeted for my artist.

Another element that has contributed in making me choose this record label for my artist is the fact that they have worked with many artists from my genre such as Lauren Sanderson,Sade,Sara Bareilles, Natasha Bedingfield and male artists such as Glenn Lewis. Thus reassuring me that they would be effectively marketed and have an understanding of their vision and image.

What is a Digipak ?

A digipak is the packaging for an album/single/DVD release. It typically consists of a book style paperboard with one or more plastic trays which hold the CD attached inside. The amount of panels on a digipak vary from 4,6 and 8.

Blank 4 Panel Digipak

The key elements of a digipak are..
  • Artist name,album name,track titles,website,price,credits:record label,producers,song writers and musicians.
  • Image of band/artist or even a graphic, record label logo (on the back cover) and bar code (usually at the back)
  • Design-colour and style to it the artist/band aesthetic
Purpose of A Digipak?
The purpose of a digipak is to promote the album and to use the corporate identity of the artist as a recurring theme as well as provide a visual aspect to the artist's product.
From a business perspective, I think the main purpose is to create more revenue as the audience will be able to purchase a physical product.

Music Industry Research

Having a knowledge of the music industry is a key part of the process as if I was to make my music video accessible to the public I would need to know the ways in which this is done and the specific platforms to target my audience.

I did some research on the industry and collected the following information:

Who are the main television companies which show videos?
There are many companies which show music videos but some of the dominant ones today are:

  • MTV
  • Capital TV
  • 4Music
  • Box Hits
  • Starz TV
  • Viva
  • VH1
  • Heart TV
  • Kiss TV
  • Youtube

Where do audiences watch music videos?
Due to the advancements in media and technology audiences are able to watch music videos through their phones which are portable,TV,laptops ,tablets and even video game consoles allowing them access at any time through their devices.

What is the purpose of music videos?
There are many purposes behind a music video such as ..

  • Music videos form a large part of an artist’s general creative vision and output. When you can stream music anywhere and everywhere a music video is a focal point — it draws your attention.
  • Music on the Internet is consumed and forgotten about daily, if not hourly. So from a record label point of view, an artist needs something bigger than an MP3 to get noticed. They need strong creative visuals to give them a substantial competitive advantage over their peers.
  • From a business perspective the sole purpose is to generate revenue through the view and streams.

What makes someone watch a music video again?
  • A good narrative
  • unique shots and framing
  • Meaningful message

New Artist Name:Eden

We have decided to alter our artist's name as we felt that Inka felt a little less unisex then we thought and suggested a female singer rather than male therefore we collectively decided to change the artist name to 'Eden'.

Our reasons for this being the act that we liked how neutral it was and as the singer in our music video is male we felt this was more ideal, in addition to this I completed a Twitter poll to gather whether people would prefer the artist name 'Inka' or 'Eden' and found that the large majority preferred 'Eden'  therefore this played a large role in my decision. The number of votes I received was 8 and out of this 0% voted for Inka.

Lastly we liked the connotations that 'Eden' had as it links to the Garden of Eve and has religious connotations which had a large influence in earlier soul songs.
