Preliminary Task Storyboard

Below I have included images of our storyboard for the preliminary task. This is a clear plan on what camera angle each frame will have as well as what will be in the frame in terms of props and background. In addition the storyboard helps match up each shot to the specific lyrics when editing in the audio.
Furthermore the storyboard acts as a guide for us as it will help us capture all the footage we need rather than filming unnecessary scenes and being more specific when illustrating the details of the shot.

Our prelim choice

For the prelim we have chosen to replicate the music video 'Down with the Trumpets' By Rizzle Kicks.
Our reason for this being the act the variety of locations that the music consisted of as it made it more interesting to watch  as a viewer rather than a repetitive location appearing, another factor that made us opt for this music video was the lip-syncing as it was a completely new concept to us and would give us the opportunity in practicing this technique in order to include this in our final music video.
Lastly the shots were mixed and the majority were handheld which looked more difficult to replicate, but we still chose to go ahead with this music video in the end.

Bruno Mars- Just the Way You Are

The music video is a mixture between abstract and narrative as the artistic illustrations done with the cassette, which is not common of the pop genre to incorporate features of abstract music videos.

Another part of the video was the the actual audio of the song as the shots were long and this fitted perfectly in terms of  the editing as the song is slow rather than upbeat.

Mura Masa- Love$ick

The music is a cross between trap and electronic through the heavy beat.
The choice of setting is a more urban space and shots showing high rise flats which fits into the trap genre.
Also the mis-en-scene in terms of costume consists of puffy jackets and tracksuits, making the music video more believable to watch.
I like how their is no lip-syncing and it is more focused on what is occurring in the shots. I also really liked the shot where the boy is in a party setting yet is making eye contact with the camera as it seems like he is out of place compared to the other teenagers. I also notice the low-key lighting on his face in comparison to the rest of the background suggesting his invisibility and the need to 'fit in;
The music video opens and finishes on a short video recorded on a phone and is like an intro.

Lana Del Rey -Summertime Sadness

I chose this music video as I thought the hazy effect applied to the shots gave a very dated look as well as the alteration of the saturation and brightness which resulted in the visuals having vintage aesthetic feel to the visuals and this is a typical  aspect of the indie genre, which therefore conforms to Goodwin's theory as the video has implemented specific genre traits.

Certain shots were handheld, giving a homemade video resemblance to particular shots e.g when the girls are spinning. In addition to this the shots are suited to music as the music is quite slow and this is reflected in the speed of the shots.

Specific props in the mis-en-scene are significant as the glass shatters symbolising the emotion of feeling broken and a sense of fragility

Ed Sheeran-The A Team

I liked the  lyrics and meaning in this video and specifically how symbolism is added through camera angles and editing.
The choice to apply black and white filter aids in creating a more gloomy and sad atmosphere.
In addition to this I liked how the girl never makes contact with the camera, until the very end, which gives the feeling that we as the audience are give an insight into her life as though we are watching over her.
Editing choices were significant in illustrating a bigger message as certain shots have been sped up in pace as it shows a crowd of people walking past her ignoring her completely. but she remains stationary in that position as it illustrates how her situation is a constant and a sense of entrapment. This in turn evokes a sense of sympathy and pity from the audience.
Likewise camera angles are important as the high angle when she looks at herself in the mirror place the audience over her giving them a dominance in terms of status and representing the girl as weak.
Something that I particularly liked about this narrative music video was the fact that the visuals illustrate the lyrics, as in my opinion it aids in easily remembering the video.
