For our music video, we have collectively decided to opt for the song 'Peace of Mind' by the artist Kehlani. Our reasoning behind this is due to the lyric as they hold meaning and the shots would revolve around a broken relationship and support the audio in having greater emphasis and empowering women. Also we could envision the layout and shots to this song as we aim for an old school R'n'B aesthetic with a modern twist , as in comparison to other songs we had looked at, the lyrics were more difficult in terms of shots that flowed with one another rather than seem misplaced or effect the continuity. In addition to this the audio was suitable as it is not very slow and melancholy like the majority of songs we had heard but instead had a beat that was a little bit more upbeat but didn't compromise the feel of the genre completely and had a more contemporary sound.
To add to this, we plan on incorporating lip-synching into our music video therefore it was necessary that the lyrics were not too fast-paced. Another reason as to why we are opting for the RnB genre is due to the fact that it is a little more different in terms of editing to modern day music videos as well as certain conventions being very obvious due to the there being a large amount of inspiration from music videos within the genre, which would aid us in the production of our project. Likewise, the song has no music video, which is an advantage as the audience would not make any comparison and allows us more creativity with shots. Lastly, in regards to the audience the song will appeal to young teenagers and adults as it is a more in season adaptation to the RnB genre.
audio is not too upbeat and very fitting to the typical sound of rnb sound
lyrics are said clearly and slowly -- ease of us replicating the lip-syncing.
Against
the idea for the shots is more difficult as there is not much we could think of that would be relevant especially for the duration of the song.
lyrics are not meaningful
All I have - Jennifer Lopez
For
Lyrics are meaningful,we can subvert stereotypical assumptions
Sung on a good pace therefore it will be easier to lip-sync
more freedom for shot ideas
Against
singing is a little too tuned
the introduction is very long
we would need to include a male singer
Better in time -Leona Lewis
For
pace of the song is ideal as it begins slow but then gets faster towards the chorus
lyrics hold meaning therefore more impact when shots appear in sequence.
the lyrics allow us to have more creativity in terms of shots.
fits into the sort of vision we have with our shot ideas as we want to follow the convention of breakups and difficult relationships.
we can subvert gender stereotypes of women as the lyrics says "thought I couldn't live without you" inferring realisation and suggesting independence without a male figure.
Against
very well-known song therefore audience will compare to original music video .
We have chosen the RnB genre for our music video as we feel we can be more creative and the genre is not commonly done.In addition to this RnB has developed so much in recent years compared to the past therefore we can combine the new and old elements together. There are two sub- genres, slow RnB and Fast RnB. There are obvious distinctions between the two, common features of this genre include.. Slow RnB
Low key lighting to add more intensity.
Shots typically include close-ups of face and body
Singers usually sexualised through clothes, which tend to be simple and neutral colours rather than bright, they also wear less jewelry.
Greyscale / sepia tone edited onto shots
Slow RnB songs commonly have a narrative e.g breakup or flashbacks of a past relationship.
Meaningful lyrics
Fast RnB
More flashy jewelry and cars.
Mis-en-scene typically involves locations such as night clubs with props such as champagne and artificial lighting, therefore resembling a party scene
Women wearing bright revealing clothing and very sexualised through makeup and hair.
From producing our preliminary task and looking back at the music video we created in AS. I feel as though music videos have more detail in terms of editing that needs to be done in order for a professional and smooth look such as when the audio is inserted and making sure that it matches up when the singer begins to lip sync as it is obvious for the audience to see. Therefore there is more emphasis on accuracy. In addition to this the shots need to fit with the audio as placement can sometimes seem odd or mismatched as well as editing the shot changes to the beat of the audio. I further found that the storyboard had to be more detailed in terms of the actions done and what lyrics are said in particular shots whereas the film opening was less concise in actions that would be performed and could easily be adapted on the spot.
Whilst importing the shots that we had recorded onto IMovie software, we found that the quality of our shots were not as good and clear as they when viewed on the iphone that we had recorded on and we tried to improve the quality of the shots by adapting certain settings but the result was still the same when exported.
